LUCY’S STORY
Clinical Trial: Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that can begin at any age, but often first appears during childhood. As it can be a lifelong condition, it can deeply affect self-image, self-esteem, self-confidence, and mental health of sufferers. This type of hair loss is estimated to affect over 6.8 million people in the US alone.

Currently there is no cure for this condition, but recent clinical trials have shown promising results. Today we share Lucy’s experience with a clinical trial for alopecia areata.

Lucy

I’m Lucy and I run my own fashion brand here in Sydney. I moved to Australia from Ireland 2 years ago and I just love it. I have been living with alopecia areata for over 5 years.

My alopecia started in November 2015 and I was fully bald by May 2017. For the 18 months my hair was falling out I kept hoping it would stop and grow back. I finally shaved the last patch off in May 2017.

I wore wigs for about 2-3 years, played around with hats and turbans, but I think I only really grew to accept it and love myself when I went around as a baldie.

I never received any medical treatment in Ireland, it was seen as something that could not be cured. When I came to Sydney, I visited a GP who took a special interest in helping me and referred me to St Vincent’s Hospital, where they informed me about a clinical trial at The Skin Hospital.

Participating in a clinical trial was not something I had ever imagined so I could not believe my luck when I was able to sign up. While I was excited, I was also a little anxious about starting and the possible risks involved. However, it proved to be an amazing experience and one I would recommend others to consider.

The staff were lovely, always friendly and welcoming. The whole team was amazing and very caring about me as a patient. They explained everything very clearly, gave me a lot of time to ask questions and were very patient addressing all my worries and doubts.

The outcome for me was life changing. I had no negative effects and I feel great. The results have been amazing, and I am close to having full hair regrowth. I now wear my dream hair style.

I honestly feel that being involved in the clinical trial has made me happier and more confident. I am so grateful for the trial and can’t believe how amazing it has been.
