What is a clinical trial?

Clinical trials are research studies in which volunteers participate to test new treatments for managing a medical condition. Some studies may compare the effectiveness of a new treatment to a standard treatment or to a placebo with no active medication. This helps to determine if a new treatment works, safe to use, and if it is better than existing treatments.

Why do we need clinical trials?

Clinical trials are required to develop new and better treatments. Without clinical trials, we cannot determine with certainty that the new treatment works and is safe to use. Treatments that are approved for clinical trial testing, are first rigorously tested in laboratory studies using cell cultures and animal models. Treatments that are demonstrated to have beneficial outcomes in laboratory studies are approved for clinical trials.
