Patch testing

At The Skin Hospital, we diagnose and treat all diseases and medical conditions associated with the skin, hair, and nails. Our highly trained dermatologists work with plastic and oculoplastic surgeons, dermatology nurses and trained medical administration staff to provide exceptional patient care.

What is patch testing?

Patch testing helps identify whether your skin condition is caused or made worse by an allergic reaction to certain substances.

During the test, small amounts of potential allergens are applied to your back using adhesive patches. These stay in place for a couple of days before being carefully checked by your dermatologist to see how your skin reacts.

Patch testing is a safe and effective way to find the cause of allergic skin reactions and guide your treatment or prevention plan. Your dermatologist will explain the process, what to expect, and how to care for your skin during the testing period.

We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which The Skin Hospital operates. For thousands of years, these lands have been cared for by Indigenous communities and their ancestors. We recognise and appreciate their ongoing connection to Country, culture, and community. We also pay our respects to the elders, past and present, of these communities, as well as to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have contributed to the cultural heritage of this country.
