Causes & Symptoms

Female dermatoses are skin conditions that specifically affect women, with vulvar dermatoses being a common and often chronic type of dermatoses.

These conditions often show symptoms like:

  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Redness
  • Lesions
  • Pain

The main causes and risk factors of female dermatoses include:

  • Allergens and irritants: contact with substances that trigger an allergic reaction
  • Autoimmune disorders: conditions where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue
  • Infections: bacterial or fungal infections
  • Hormonal changes: menopause can be a factor, though the relationships is still being studied
  • Hygiene and other factors: poor hygiene and prolonged use of sanitary napkins have been linked to vulvar dermatoses

Management often involves identifying and avoiding irritants, proper hygiene and the use of topical anti-inflammatory treatments. In some cases, conditions require lifelong management.
