Causes & Symptoms
Female dermatoses are skin conditions that specifically affect women, with vulvar dermatoses being a common and often chronic type of dermatoses.
These conditions often show symptoms like:
Itching
Burning
Redness
Lesions
Pain
The main causes and risk factors of female dermatoses include:
Allergens and irritants: contact with substances that trigger an allergic reaction
Autoimmune disorders: conditions where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissue
Infections: bacterial or fungal infections
Hormonal changes: menopause can be a factor, though the relationships is still being studied
Hygiene and other factors: poor hygiene and prolonged use of sanitary napkins have been linked to vulvar dermatoses
Management often involves identifying and avoiding irritants, proper hygiene and the use of topical anti-inflammatory treatments. In some cases, conditions require lifelong management.
We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which The Skin Hospital operates. For thousands of years, these lands have been cared for by Indigenous communities and their ancestors. We recognise and appreciate their ongoing connection to Country, culture, and community. We also pay our respects to the elders, past and present, of these communities, as well as to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have contributed to the cultural heritage of this country.
