Causes & Symptoms

Acne is a very common condition, affecting people of all ages. At The Skin Hospital we treat over 4000 patients each year so we understand the distress this skin condition can cause.

Acne is characterised by the presence of blackheads and whiteheads (known as comedones), and in more severe cases there is inflammation with pustules and cysts. In most cases, this condition starts at adolescence due to the changes in hormone levels but it can also be experienced by all age groups, including the elderly. It can range from a few spots on the face, neck, back or chest which most teenagers will experience at some point, to a more significant problem that can result in acne scarring.
