Periodically, The Skin Hospital offers up to two Dermatology Research Fellow positions for MBBS graduates at PGY3 level or higher who have a strong interest in dermatology research. These part-time roles provide a unique opportunity to gain experience in both clinical trials and academic research while engaging with leading dermatologists across our Darlinghurst and Westmead campuses.
The Skin Hospital is home to a world-class clinical trials unit, nationally recognised for conducting cutting-edge dermatology trials. Fellows play a central role in facilitating these studies under the supervision of Principal Investigators. In addition, they may undertake their own research projects and participate in dermatology clinic observerships, with opportunities to learn from specialists in areas such as Mohs surgery and cosmetic dermatology.
Education is a core focus of The Skin Hospital, which works closely with the Australasian College of Dermatologists. Fellows have access to dermatology seminars, workshops, and educational series facilitated by the hospital, supporting their professional and academic development.
The Fellowship is a 3 to 4-day-per-week position. Fellows may choose to observe dermatology clinics on non-trial days; however, these sessions are honorary and unpaid. Occasionally, Fellows may be offered paid clinic opportunities based on institutional needs. While primarily based at one hospital, Fellows may be required to attend both our Westmead and Darlinghurst facilities depending on operational requirements.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
The positions are advertised on our Careers page and the Australasian College of Dermatologists website.
Selection is based on medical school performance, research experience, and demonstrated interest in dermatology.
Beyond Fellowships, The Skin Hospital occasionally offers opportunities for unpaid supervised clinical projects suitable for medical students, Master’s and PhD candidates, and postgraduate nursing researchers. These projects reflect the hospital’s commitment to advancing dermatologic care through collaborative research partnerships.
The positions are advertised on our Careers page and the Australasian College of Dermatologists website.
We recruit up to two positions each year. The Dermatology Research Fellows are also supported by Clinical Trial Coordinators.
The position is 3-4 days per week.
Our Fellows interact with expert dermatologists specializing in various dermatology areas such as Mohs procedure and cosmetic dermatology on a daily basis. Any time you choose to observe on your non-clinical trial days are considered honorary and therefore unpaid. You are not expected to do work on those days. From time to time, we may offer you paid clinics based on the needs of The Skin Hospital.
Whilst you will primarily be based at one of our hospitals, you may be asked to work across both hospitals from time to time. Which hospital will be your primary base will depend on a number of factors including your preference and our requirements.
To be eligible for this role, you must have the right to work in Australia (either as a citizen or permanent residency). We do not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Unfortunately not – to be eligible for this role, you must have completed your two years post-graduate Residency. We hope to hear from you once you’ve completed your Residency.
Research is one of the three core pillars of The Skin Hospital. We are committed to improving dermatologic treatments through collaborative research partnerships.
We are always looking to partner with those who share our passion for research in dermatology. We occasionally have opportunities to undertake unpaid supervised clinical projects that may be suitable for medical students, Masters students, PhD students and nursing (Masters and PhD) postgraduate degrees.
