Anyone wishing to operate class 3B or 4 lasers used in medicine and surgery.
This course is approved for the purposes of obtaining a Class B or 4 operating license in QLD, TAS or WA.
|Overview:||The course content follows the recommendations of ASNZS4173:2004. Professor Lee Collins will present a comprehensive programme that covers all the safety requirements of all surgical and cosmetic medical lasers. Topics covered include operational characteristics of lasers, laser hazards, principles and procedures for safe laser use as well some information on operation and safety of IPL’s.|
|About the speaker:||A/Prof Collins is a medical physicist and prior to his retirement in 2014 was the Director of the Medical Physics Department at Westmead Hospital where he now has an honorary position.|
His interests are in ionising radiation safety, laser safety, diagnostic radiology physics, and nuclear medicine. Since leaving university in 1968 he has worked in hospitals in Australia and the UK and during a research appointment in Germany he became interested in laser applications in medicine.
He is Chairman of the Standards of Australia medical laser committee (which is responsible for AS/NZS 4173 and AS IEC 60601.2.22), and represents Australia at the International Electrotechnical Commission committee TC76 which develops the international laser safety standards from which national standards are derived. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2003, and has held honorary academic roles at the Universities of Sydney and Western Sydney.
